ok ok ok... need input from the quad gods :D
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:00:05 pm »
seens how my boyfriend jesse has gotten his YFZ450... i have decided i am ready to buy a quad as well...

what to get what to get.....

i have narrowed it down to 3 choices...

2008 YFZ450SE, candy blue/white
2008 Raptor 700SE, red/black

or....

a 2008 Polaris Outlaw... white/white solid axle  with the KTM 525....  :sherlock:

From what ive read stock/stock the Outlaw will ANIHILATE both the raptor and the yfz450... but the 450 with a pipe and jet will probably edge out the stock 525....

input wanted/appreciated.

The KTM 525 doesnt beat the Raptor in a drag race.  They want you to believe that it does, but it wont.

Stock for Stock they are all awesome bikes though.  Personally I would go with the Raptor, but I am biased.  Seriously though - the Raptor rocks.  Think of the 700 as a big block Chevy under the hood.  Its a torque monster.

You might also want to look at the LTR-450, pretty sweet bikes as well.  But I still recommend the Raptor.

Check out www.raptorforum.com  JP (Dracus) from here started that forum up when he bought his Raptor, its an awesome site.  TONS of information there.

i will have to check that out :D

why is it that on youtube and such all the drag race videos i see has 525's rocking raptors/yfZ's... and also YFZ's barely edging out raptors in stock form?? the low compression of the raptor is what made the least amount of sense to me. why go so low in stock form?

I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. The raptor and the LTR 450 are completely different quads. The raptor is bigger and has much more torque, but you have to shift it quite a bit lower than the LTR 450. The LTR 450 is much lighter and revs to the moon with power all the way to the top. The Raptor is much more comfortable and has a softer suspension, where the LTR 450 is more set up for racing and is quite a bit stiffer. As far as the polaris goes I would just get the KTM if that is what you are looking for. They aren't that fast, however, for a 525, but the KTM version has some pretty cool options, but you will pay for it! As far as the YFZ 450 goes its a good all around quad. It dosn't really excell in any of the areas of racing, for instance, Motocross, or crosscountry, but it does well in both. It's a good dune quad. My recomendation however is the LTR 450. Not that I'm biast, but I looked all of them before I got mine. The LTR is fuel injected which saves quite a bit of headache IMO. The Kawasaki 450 R is a turd and pretty much a waste of time so don't even look at it! The other recomendation would be the BRP DS 450. Really cool quad!

Depends on your goals.

For jumping/motocross I would get a 450 - you can feel the lighter weight and they usually start with better suspension.
For hill shooting I would get a Raptor (or used 2 stroke)- has the most potential for modded power
For all around - probably a Raptor.  Nice broad torque band for easy riding/instant throttle response.  Great base to mod with.  Put YFZ450 shocks on the front and it is ok for jumping (handles whoops much better).  But an intake/exhaust/PCIII  (the "Big 3") on it and it really wakes up.  Start adding 15t sproket, then high comp piston and cam = very nice(so I have heard).  Then you can always go even bigger cubes = monster :)

Don't ask me, I buy old shitty carbed stuff, that generally out runs the LT450R's, Raptor 700's, YFZ 450's, etc. etc. etc.
(stock / slightly modded ones anyway)

thanks for all the posts guys.

the ltr450... not such a fan of the way they look. for some odd reason the polaris just looks BAD.. the front end looks like a skeleton with wing claw things that are going to eat small children  ;D

the raptor... so they make power commanders for em? im guessing basically the same as the ones for the R1 bikes?  also, dont the raptor and the YFZ have the same shocks stock now in 08?

the main concern with the KTM engined outlaw is im just concerned that there is no more real "mod potential", as its already a built race bike motor ya know? you guys know me and when i get a quad it clearly wont stay stock long.

how do raptors respond to nitrous? how about the higher compression bikes like the YFZ's?  how hard are jets and such to change for the carbs? i havent dealt with bikes/quads for about 7 years since i had my kawasaki 125 dirt bike...

btw hoppie... i am a banshee NUT... im just concerned about buying a used quad, i like to buy things new and make them my own rather than deal with other peoples problems. how are used banshee's? i know you can get them for pretty dang cheap and i LOVE the way they look.

Buying a used Banshee is kind of a roll of the dice, luckily I knew the guy I got mine from ... BUT you can pick them up for less than half of a new 4 stroke costs, and for a few more $$$ in mods be just as fast ...

Yes the Power Commander is available for the Raptor 700, the majority of the folks over on raptorforum.com run one, so there are 100's of maps available - and its easy to build your own as well.

The Raptor and the YFZ both respond very well to N20.  Gofast68 runs N20 on his Raptor, and Camaro_Dave runs N20 on his YFZ, both scream once they hit the juice, and neither have had any sort of motor problems from running it.

The Raptor's FI is really good - and I believe its every bit as good as the LTR's, but I could be wrong...

I love my Raptor for sure.  But seriously though - its like the whole Ford vs Chevy debate.  In reality most of the sport quads (at least the ones discussed here) are ALL good bikes, and all respond to mods well.  Just do your homework and get what you like...... I'll just give you crap if you DONT get the Raptor

well my buddy went and was talking to the polaris monkeys about the outlaw... i guess they are having alot of failures on the KTM engines locally... looks like polaris is out.

RAPTOR FTW!!! i want the fuel injection and dont like the ltr450's looks.. looks like raptor is the only way to go, with some mods and some juice.  I also have a spare 14b turbo off my dsm laying around that would tuck up pretty nice  >:D

Nothing wrong with that. The modded rappy is proly faster anyway! LOL! Ok so last year I brought 10 gallons of gas and only used 5. So I'm only going to bring 7.5 this year and hope I make it!

I'm VERY interested in the way Jeff's 700 Raptor performs, it's like the big block of quads, and I hope his runs like a 615 ci Chevy :)

Oh and if you can't beat them (not me, them) JOIN 'EM :

Yeah I'm interested also. I don't know what kind of power the raptors make, but my quad with it's mods averages about 55 hp to the wheels. It's different from one dyno to the next. That and my quad is about 15 lbs lighter than it used to be!
