LS1 engine removal...
« on: August 14, 2005, 04:05:07 pm »
Ok, I'm getting ready to pull an LS1 engine for a friend.  I've pulled plenty of motors, but never one from a 4th gen.  I've heard out the bottom is the way to go.  I know 89POS has done it both ways and prefers out the top, anyone else care to chime in?

I'll be doing it in a well equipped shop with both a cherry picker and a 4 post lift.  I've never dropped one out the bottom before, and it's a project I have to complete in 1 day so I'm more inclined to pull out the top cause that's what I know.

Thoughts?

if you have a lift, out the bottom is the only way to go. all you do is unplug the wiring harness, remove all hoses, unbolt steering rack, unbolt shock mounts, unhook driveline, remove transmition cross member, and remove the 6 bolts holding up the k member. Then it all just falls out! I can't remember how the brake lines come off though.

1jfuddle and I tried to drop his out the bottom (with no lift BTW).  It didn't work out the best.  I know he has pulled his out the top a few times now.

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

http://www.tpis.com makes a engine removal tool called the "Happy Hooker" that will assist you in getting a 4th Gen motor out the top.

If you have a 4 post lift (as in not the type you drive onto but the type that lifts the body itself) then take it out the bottom. The reason I prefer to take em out the top is because I do not have a lift, and to get enough room to drop it out the bottom with jackstands is just retarded, and I have never gotten it stable enough to trust getting under it with it that high in the air.

Doing it this weekend with a 4 post lift.  Going to try out the bottom.  Wish me luck.  Wish my buddies bottom end luck too, lol.  We're hoping we can get away with just swapping some rod/main bearings.

you don't have to pull the motor to do that. I just replaced my rod bearings with standard ones and everything came out ok. Hopefully!

Doesn't matter now anyway.  The guy sold the car.
