Trying to slow down
« on: July 31, 2008, 08:31:27 am »
I knew as most of you know that it is a challenge and difficult to try and go faster and faster......
I didn't realize how hard it is to slow a car down after going fast.  A few weeks ago Angii blew up the torque converter and trans in the dragster.  I got it all put back together last night right before the track opened and we went down there for 1/8 mile drags.  Her best in the past a few weeks back was a 6.40 @ 108 mph.  6.39 or faster requires a NHRA license and is the equivalent to a 9.99 in the 1/4.  Right out of the trailer it went 6.02 @ 113.   :nono: :metal: :scaredjanine:  Until she gets her license we have to slow the car down.  I ended up disconnecting the secondaries on the carb, pulling 20* of timing back, and turning the shift point down from 6500 to 5700 rpm.  The car didn't like that.  It was blubbering and loading up but still went 6.55 @ 107.

BTW - this is just a SBC (355 cid) street engine on 87 octane.

Hi Cody,

I had the same issue with the chevelle when I didnt have a cage. You really have to choke down the throttle to make a big difference yet most carbs dont like that but with fuel injection it's very easy and reliable. Did that with Nancy's vette too.  I found leaving the timing alone and choking the air flow was best....

It's amazing how fast you can go in a lite weight dragster vs a car. Nancy's doing 5.60@121 in the 1/8 with just an LS1 with cam/heads on 91 octane. More people should be doing this since it's very affordable.

See you in Boise?

Well she completed her licensing a few weeks ago in Madras, and we went to Boise for the team finals this past weekend.  This was the first time she was able to run 1/4 mile since licensing.  The DA was around 6000 feet and the car consistantly ran 9.7x's @ 137 mph.  It was running a little rich but we didn't have time or data to change to much of the jetting.
