TBI conversion.............?
« on: March 15, 2009, 10:19:20 pm »
ok....  Need some input.  I'm gettin ready to put in a new motor into my 90 Camaro and am hating my TBI.  Anybody dealt with converting to a carb. and still gettin emissions to pass?  :nono: I've had no problems the past couple years getting my 305 to pass with no air injection or smog pump, just curious if anyone has advice..... ???   Thanks.....

For emissions to pass, you're most likely going to have to get an emissions computer controlled carb, computer controlled distributor and have the cat and A.I.R. tubes hooked up.  I know that carbs are harder to tune than the TBI's but then again, if you can get the TBI to pass emissions without all that stuff, then maybe you can do it with a carb.

I do know though that if you take off the tbi, you'll need to get a different distributor, most likely one that is vacuum advanced, turn off your or unplug your ECM and switch to a different fuel pump...or at least run a regulator that holds 7psi (8-9 is max for a carb without flooding it) as well as the new fuel lines.  Beyond that, I can't really think of anything else you'll need other than a carb-based intake manifold.  They are different than the TBI models.

Ok, in WEber, Davis, Salt lake and Utah counties, if you are missing ANY of your emissions equipment from 1984 and newer cars, you will fail your emissions test as soon as they pop your hood.  I just thought you might want to be aware of that.  Oh yeah, and other than the fact you will get worse gas mileage...good luck!

Ok, check out the following link...

go ahead and copy and paste that into your browser.  That is all you should ever need to know about putting TBI on your car.  Hope this helps!
