A new direction...
« on: February 01, 2010, 09:09:23 pm »
Never tried this... though I've wanted to for 10 years now, even built my old 383 low compression for boost, but never did it.  I thought I'd give it a shot this go around :wootwoot:

Boost will be mild (5-6#s to start), but I'm excited.  Should be here before the weekend too....

Sweet. I'm not sure why, but for some reason I'm sure that 5-6 lbs will end up around 10-15, then 20-25 and so on! LOL!

Vortech instead of Pro Charger head ?

I haven't done LT1 kit research but I thought Pro C heads were way ahead of Vortech's now ... ???

Ideally I would have bought a procharger for sure, but this was about 1/2 the price of what I could have picked one up for.

Nice.  I'm looking for one too.  I'm going to make the camaro into a NHRA Super Street class car (10.90 Index).  With the engine I have now, it runs 11.5x's and turbo's or super chargers are allowed in the class but N2O is not.  So I'm thinking 8-9 lbs boost should get me to 10.90's.  Have fun with that Jeff.

BTW - I may have my built 10 bolt for sale soon.  I already know majority of peoples opinions on the 10 bolt, but this one is the strongest one I've seen.  The only reason I may sell it is because I have a friend that is thinking of selling me his 9" for $850.

I can't remember if they sell a reluctor ring for the 9" for the ABS on the f-body or not. I know some people have done it, but you might want to look at that if you want to keep the ABS.

Oh yeah, the blower did show up today.... the head unit is practically mint.  He said he had less than 2,000 miles on it, and I believe it.  The bearings are still tight, the impeller is still mint looking.... can't wait to get this thing installed!

Yeah I knew you had a 12 bolt Jeff.  Just throwing out info for others.

Geoff - ABS has been removed from the car and I already have a different type of pick up for the speedo where as I don't have a reluctor ring in my current 10 bolt.  My understanding is that the reluctor ring is for the speedo, not the ABS.

it was different on the LS1 and the LT1 cars. I know the LS1 cars used a reluctor ring on the diff for the ABS, but I can't remember if the LT1 cars did or not...

Fired up the car last night and took it for a spin.  Everything working great.  I havent hooked up the meth kit yet, but I'm only running about 4.5-5lbs of boost at shift point, which is a great point to start tuning with.  Its amazing how much difference such little boost makes.... love :)

I have to say, I'm kinda disappointed at how quiet this blower is!  But thats really a good thing, I just expected more of a whine, I can barely hear it... and the exhaust (SLP LM2) really drowns it out).

Now to install the wideband O2, mount the boost gauge, and install the meth kit and order up some pulleys!

I had the same problem years ago I installed a B&M 144 blower on a 350. I was extremely disappointed with no whine Until I learned that the whine came from the gears that drive the blower ( some are made helical and dont produce  but a little or no whine. Straight cut whine) My solution was a Pete Jackson Noisy gear drive ..  Then  I had plenty of whine   except for a minor problem   almost everytime someone else heard it  (ex stop light  etc  ) I was always informed  " hey buddy   do you know you got a  alt bearing  going out?  a fan belt noise  etc ... Never once was it a WOW  HE HAS A BLOWER ! I dont even know if PJ makes a gear drive for your app   BTW  loved the little blower   pulley swaps etc  I managed 12 # of boost  oh also  low octane gas made me go through 2 sets of pistons   Stupid detonation

If you want some noise, get a different bypass valve. I had the big red procharger race valve venting to atmosphere. Now that was loud!

What tune were you running?  Where was your MAF?  Ive thought about venting to atmosphere but didnt want to screw up driveability by jacking the maf readings.

I'll take a vid one of these days....  :pimp:

I was running speed density, but before that the maf was in the original location. As long as the bypass is before the metered air you will be ok. Besides that when your venting to atmosphere your not recirculating the hot compressed air so in turn your intercooler will have less heat soak.

Yeah... i dont have an intercooler yet, and my MAF is right behind the air filter, down in the wheel well under the headlight.  I dont see a way to plumb in the MAF with the SC ---> TB piping thats included or I would put it after the blower....   maybe i could plug the MAF into the outlet of the blower, and trim the plastic piece that runs from the blower to the TB elbow though.... might work?

eventually I want to get an intercooler, but it'll be awhile.

I did my own piping cuz its fairly cheap. get on ebay and find a 3" intercooler pipiing kit that has rolled ends so the clamps will grap. Some kits even come with decent t-bolt clamps and 3-4 ply silicone couplers. Universal fmic's are very cheap and effective, I ran an obx brand and you can fit a big one easily. I believe mine was 31x12x4"
