Turbo or Supercharger or ????
« on: May 11, 2010, 11:29:37 am »
Sooo Im thinking what the next step down the road could be and I had always leaned towards a bolt on supercharger but lately some of my co-workers are trying to talk up turbos. Things like it takes HP to make it with a supercharger where you dont do that with a turbo etc.

Just wondering what the thoughts around here with the crowd is, what you have seen and what gains they each offer?

Im not too familiar with the LS1's....just started getting into them. However, in my mind turbo's are better. Keep in mind with a turbo you can run alot more boost then a supercharger. However, with a supercharger you won't have any lag either. I'm going to turbo mine. You can bolt up a T4 single turbo (garrett, BW, precison, turbonetics) and still probably make 1000 whp with the right turbo and tune. I ran the GT4294 on my talon and made 700whp...imagine if this was on a V-8.  I think turbo's are the only way to go. Look at Kentucky turbo.com

I prefer turbo's also.
Have boost when you want it, or don't have it if you don't want...
Have full boost by around 2300 rpm as opposed to near redline...
You can change you boost levels with the flick of a switch while driving, as opposed to tearing apart the supercharger...
Plus I think they sound much better on a V8!

I have an STS Turbo on my 95 Z28, and coudn't be happier (other than my ruining the turbo [never installed a blow off valve, so I've ruined the turbo])

Loving the supercharger.  Plenty of boost when I get on it - no boost when I dont (bypass valve prevents boost when not under load / full throttle).

I'm planning on running a supercharger on mine in the next few years ($$$).  But that is because I drag race mine and turbo has too much lag time and inconsistancies compared to superchargers for my needs.

Agreed ... Never seen a fuel car with a turbo due to lag  depends mostly on you preference   would you like whislte or whine.  Turbo supercharger or nitrous is a personal preference . Ive tried all 3 and cant say which one I liked best  they are all fun

I'm with Bob - they are all good.  I hate the "takes power to turn a supercharger" argument, makes my blood boil!

They both make power, and with the right ones can both make really good power.  All depends on what you want - whistle or whine.  Done right I don't think you have to worry much about turbo lag on a good size v8 like we have.  I believe a supercharger is better for a manual trans however as you loose the turbo when manually shifting where the load in the auto keeps the turbo spooled - I think.

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

There are a couple poll threads over at LS1 and it seems the majority are leaning towards turbos now. Actually I was amazed at the numbers, I had always assumed that was an import thing.

I think that turbo's are more efficient then superchargers. Given that turbo's are exhaust driven and do not rob the motor of power like superchargers. Yes you get low end tq and power with a super charger, but you get more top end with a turbo. It kinda depends on what you want from your car. If you want to cruise around with low end, pick up a supercharger. Also keep in mind belts. That's just one more thing that can go wrong (break). Another thing to look at is an MBC or EBC with a turbo. There's nothing like turning a knob to up the boost on a turbo'd application, whereas a supercharger needs to be taken apart...where's the fun in that?lol :)

Yep, I have a switch mounted to my A-pillar on the side of my boost guage. Flip that switch, and it goes from the base 4-5psi to my high boost setting, which is up to 15psi, in an instant!  :scaredjanine:

Nice!! I'm going with a Hallman Pro MBC when I turbo mine. What kind of fuel are you using for high boost?
