Cam upgrade
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:01:42 pm »
So I've been doing some research...ls1 tech and some companies. I think I found a cam, 99-TR-CHEATR v.3-CAM http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog/?action=vshop&vid=3&pcid=122.
219/230 .607/.604 117 LSA.

My plan is too boost the car in the near future, so I think this will be a good blower cam. I couldn't really find any good threads regarding this cam, but from my research Thunder Racing is a good company. Basically, the intake is lower than the exhaust which will help to spool the turbo/SC a little bit quicker. It also has a good ramp rate as well. Do any of you guys have any experience with this company or any suggestions/opinions of this cam and the duration and lift?

Thunder racing is a GREAT company,...

BUT, SAD is going to have to chime in on if that cam will work out with your auto trans ...

I like those cam specs quite a bit - especially for boost.  You won't need a large intake duration because you are forcing it in.  You will like the larger exhaust duration to get the larger spent charge out.  The 117 LSA shouldn't have too much overlap, so it you won't bleed out too much boost and should have really nice manners for the auto.

(BTW - sorry I haven't gotten back with you, been a bit busy)

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

Might want to verify but If I am correct a cam optimized for boost is not universal, generally turbo's are more suited to single patterns and blower cams use more exhaust duration.  I think the turbo setups use less ex duration to maintain velocity for good boost response!  So consider which kinda boost you are going with before getting the cam.
As for LSA  like Sad said that's a good separation for reducing boost bleed off but your overlap does play a big part in determining your dynamic compression and I know some people use more overlap to lower the dynamic to thwart off detonation/allow more boost  if still running higher static compression.

Another place to look for cams i think would be Patrick G on LS1 tech  not sure if he knows boost cams but there is quite a bit of talk about his NA cams getting some amazing gains!
