98 3800 oil pressure, idle, and ticking
« on: July 20, 2010, 01:01:31 pm »
I took my car to the shop to have a window regulator replaced, and while they were there I had them replace my oil pan... unrelated issues obviously.  My old oil pan had a stripped drain plug, and the previous owner drilled out a new hole, tapped it, and put a new plug in.  When I bought the car, I drained some oil and checked for shavings.  I didn't find any and hoped that it wouldn't cause problems.  that was 3 1/2 years ago, and things have been fine.  I got it back from the shop, and was driving it that night.  When getting onto I-15, it didn't wanna downshift until I let up on the pedal.  Then when I got home, the oil pressure was low and inconsistant.  The idle matched the flicker of the oil pressure, and then it stalled.  I popped the hood, and it smelled hot; but, that could've been the 5 mile freeway drive, and residual overspill from replacing the pan.  I thought that it might just be the fuel filter being that it's been a while since I replaced it. I parked it for a few days then started driving again with the intention to run some fuel injection cleaner through it before I change that filter.  I drove it to work today, and driving 10 minutes to lunch and back, it developed a tick.  I had to drive double footed, and keep the rpms at about 1500 so that it wouldn't stall out.  I'm wondering, with a new oil pan, and no problems before, what could've gone wrong here?  Is there a chance that the shop filled it with the wrong viscosity oil?  Would that keep it from reaching the top end of the motor and give me my tick?  Where should I go from here.  I'm hesitant to return to the shop being that they charged $600 to replace the pan.

Wow, I wouldn't know where to start. Oil pressure, idle/running problems, and transmission, they all seem possibly unrelated...

You didn't get any gas right around that time, did you?

I've never seen what that engine looks like underneath, and I'm wondering what is required to change the oil pan... what needs to come off, and what could they have messed up...?

I'd definetely go back to the shop with the attitude of "what did you do to my car".
Of course, make sure its safe to drive the car first. If not, talk to the shop and see what they want you to do.
Most shops guarantee their work for some time, especially if they screwed something up. Make sure they know you won't pay for anything until they properly diagnose it, since it all started right after they worked on it.

It is entirely possible its just coincedence, that happens all the time, truthfully, but I'd still find out what they come up with.

Good luck  O0

It's possible the oil pickup got messed up and is causing the low oil pressure along with the lifter tick. Also, they could of accidentally bumped or left off one of the sensor plugs.

Take it back for sure and stop driving it, if it's an oil issue you are causing engine damage!
