Suggestions...please!!!
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:28:36 am »
Newb question.

I've done tons of research on LS1 Tech, and so far I can't find a definite answer to my question. I ordered a Yank SS3600 stall, and now need to purchase a secondary trans cooler. So far, everyone has pretty chosen the B&M 70264 kit...pretty nice I must say. My question is this, do I bypass the stock unit and run my own? Or do I (Per other members including B&M) run this B&M inline with the stock unit? Can I ask what has worked for you? I've heard that running two units will only increase pressure and create restriction. Maybe I should run my own unit and eliminate the stock unit. This way I can swap out the radiator for a griffin unit and mount it vertical. I think IMO, doing this will avoid me having to rely on the stock radiator, if something was to go wrong. Again, I'm just trying to figure out the best solution for the car.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I elected to bypass my stock in radiator unit.  I didn't like the idea that it could be heating the fluid up.  That said, I don't drive in cold weather with it much so didn't see any need to get it warmer.  You may want to keep it going through that if you do drive in cold.

I have a large B&M cooler and also a heatsink type cooler (similar to this http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Cooling-Heating/Section/Oil-Coolers/Product-Line/Derale-Cooling-Products-Heat-Sink-Transmission-Coolers/?autoview=SKU) for my setup.

One thing I learned if you are going to get a temp gauge for it - I had mine in the test port on the transmission, at low speeds it would read really hot.  I compared it to what the PCM knew the pan fluid temp to be and they were very inaccurate.  I moved my sending unit out of the test port and inline after that.

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

I was considering a trans cooler following my transmission rebuild.  The mechanic I spoke to there said to put the transcooler in line after the radiator.  That way the cooler does a better job of cooling the "already cooled" fluid.
