wheel hop and vibrations.......
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:32:30 pm »
Looking for any help.....  I finally made it back home and put some time in the seat of my 90 Camaro.  Recently I put in a T-5 and an Eaton posi with 3.73's.  When I get on the freeway I have a vibration all the way up to my shifter, and when I get up to lets say "80"mph the vibration gets really bad....?  Also, don't know if its related?  But when I get a good launch the marrow will grab hard then start wheel hopping, I assume its just my posi trying to engage but this is my first car without a locker so i am unfamiliar....  Then to top it all off I snapped my cross-member nearly in half, and ripped the clamshell right off the transmission.  So, I got a new clamshell and fabricated up a mount on my new crossmember to avoid the stress of the tranny twisting on the tourqe-arm.  However the bushing got burnt from the exhaust so now my tourqe arm is loose, maybe thats the cause of the vibration???  Anyway, Merry Chrismas to you all, I'll be lookin for you on the street.

Check out  spohn.net   great 3rd gen parts place.  they sell tubular crossmembers for reasonable prices.  All parts are made in-house.

Are you sure you set the rear up right?  Anything loose?  I don't know how bad a loose torque arm would affect vibration but it is connected to the rear so its going to telgraph all that vibration up.  Its possible that bad bushing is the cause of it...or at least is contributing to it.

For the wheel hop, you may need lower control arm relocation brackets.  check out thirdgen.org and do a search, I recall reading about someone with a similar problem.  Sorry I can't be more help.

thanks,  as far as i know the rear end is set up right, however this all happened after I rebuilt my transmission and put the gears in......  santa may have to make another trip to my house for some relocation brackets, haha.  Maybe a little lighter on the skinny pedal for now.
Been a while since I've been on, the T/A on the road yet?

Yeah, mostly.  just installed a new tank, puimp and sender...car runs great but it looks like the sender I put in isn't compatable with my guage.  It reads empty at the moment.

The torque are being loose might have something to do with both, I would fix that and go from there.

If that didn't fix the vibration, maybe the driveshaft or tailshaft was hurt when the crossmember broke?

For the wheel hop if it still continues I would look at getting LCA relocation brackets, then aftermarket LCA, then maybe your shocks.

Get that torque arm fixed and keep us updated.

I didn't think of thje driveshaft being damaged.  That would really cause vibration issues.

Check the sticky in this section - make sure your pinion angle is dead on (compared to the output shaft of your transmission - important!).  If its off with the factory TA, you likely bent it.

Good point Jeff, especially if he mount is loose, the pinion angle could be always in flux as he drives.

I'm getting a few more days off next weekend, that'll be a good time to rip it apart.  I spent all this weekend installing new KRB seats, (fabing brackets is not fun,), also a 1200 watt amp and a 10" sub :metal:, relocating the power wire for my radar detector, and just for fun installed a push button start. :pimp:  Santa was good to me this year.  :joker:
We'll see how everything looks,  I snapped the bracket by dumping the clutch in reverse, one good hop and the tourqe arm went right through the cross member.  I'm guessing if I get under there I should be able to feel something loose....?   Will look at the pinion angle, I'm betting it going to be off considering my clamshell is on the crossmember now....
Glad to hear the T/A is running Ozz, the fuel gauge in my Camaro gets as high a 3/4 and sits on 1/4 for about 100 miles, I just gave up and tring to fix my float, lol.  Still better than my Scout that runs backwards, haha  :nono:
Thanks for the advice fellas, I'll update this weekend.

well, finally got the camaros 4" of clearance up a little higher and took a look at my drivetrain.  Nothing seems to be loose, the u-joints don't have a play... so I dunno.  I'm going to try to find a new clamshell and relocate it back to the stock location to get my pinion angle right again, and find a new cross-member.....  so, till then I'm just going to keep on keepin on, haha

I'll have to double check but I think Spohn sells a adjustable torque arm that mounts to the cross member as well as the ones that mount to the stock transmission mount.

Ok, just checked.  Spohn does sell a cross member mounted torque arm and an appropriate transmission crossmember in a kit.   www.spohn.net

I like it ozz!  got laid off last week so we'll call it future plans.  I did go to the junk yard today and pulled a new clam shell and cross-member, just had to order a new clam bushing so waiting for that.  However..... I was putting on my stock springs in the back and realized I have almost 1/2 inch of side play in my axles...?  Normal for an eaton posi???  Also, when I rebuilt my transmission and installed my driveline it took some muscle to get it into the tailshaft on the transmission.  If I pushed out the bushing could this cause a vibration?  Looking at the rear seal on the tranny its already leaking, I think I only have like 4000 on the tranny, and really don't want to pull off the tail section, haha.

I lied, took it on the freeway and it felt like it was gonna rattle apart... pinion angle is good...  i've heard if you feel it in the seat its the rear end, if its in the dash and steering wheel its the front end?  any ideas?

Thats true, for the vibrations anyway.  driveshaft out of balance?  Wheels out of balance?  bent rim?

its a pretty violent vibration, I'm starting to think its the rear end.  I wish I could pin-point when it started but it all started after I did my new motor, transmission and posi, which I did all at the same time.  you know anyone/place honest that works on differentials? :help2:

update.....  when I made my new relocation bracket I adjusted my rear brakes, (pretty loose).  Today I adjusted them back down figuring maybe the drums were warped, more better!  still have a slight vibration but at least its driveable.  when I get back in town next weekend I'm going to have it looked at, just waiting to hear back from Premier, in the mean time Sailor Jerrys and coke  :beerchug:, thanks fellas

You checked the pinion angle against the output shaft of the transmission, and not the driveshaft, right?
