4th gen gas gauge.
« on: September 04, 2005, 04:47:03 pm »
So my gas gauge tells me that I drove all the way to Bentover (wendover) on 1/8 tank of gas, and on the way home it burries itself way past E and stays there the whole way home. What the heck is up with these stupid gas gauges? Does anyone know how to fix them? It seems like it's just a piece of crap to begin with.

Yeah the design of the tank sucks, in a V shape.  They should have sent the fuel sender's info through the PCM, and gone through a formula to determine the right amount of fuel you have, instead of just showing where the gas level is in the tank.  Oh well.  :-\

ya I agree, one day while at the pump, I filled my car up  all the way.. like 15.6 gallons, and I know my tank is 16.8.  Anyway I was on -E lol, and so I filled it up all the way.....well when I turned the car on....the guage read even lower then it was before I filled it!!! it was like ALL THE WAY BELOW E!!!

and the car would barely run.....so I shut it off. waited a few, turned it back on..and it read  full.........I dunnno.....kinda flakey don't ya think.................other then that though, never had a problem with it since...when It reads "E"or when "CHECK GUAGES" comes on it means I have about 2 gallons left......it's pretty accutate..... :sherlock:

I've noticed in my 93 Z28 it stays at the full mark a long time then falls rapidly. I believe my tank is only a 15.5 gal tank. It is really off as far as a measuring indicator. It reads at least a 1/3 beyond the Fulll mark when filled to the top. When I fill it up I wait till the pumps mozzle clicks off and then continue to fill until I can actually hear it gurggling in the filler tube. So I can get consistent measurements of the amount used between fill ups. WHich is especially important now the gas has gone so high.

Many GM vehicles have this problem, my father in laws Siverado always reads empty right after you fill it full.  I asked a friend at the dealer once a long time ago and I think he said you have to replace the guage cluster to fix it $$$

If you have welded on your car and not disconnected the batery, sometimes that can mess up guages.  :-\
