My 92 RS build
« on: February 12, 2011, 06:52:21 pm »
Hey, thought I'd post up my project and my immediate plans for it. Its a 92 RS Camaro hard top. It has a 350 and a 700r4. The car has stock 305 heads and TBI still on it. I am torn on whether or not I want to keep the TBI or throw on a carb as I don't have what I need to tune it. What I do know is that the heads are going away in favor of a set of Vortec heads. I plan on a 99% street car here so I have another undecided dilemma. I have everything to swap a T5 in. I'm easy enough on a car that it probably wouldn't break on me but I just can't decide. The car is getting a 4th gen rear with 3.42s and positraction and I have a set of SS wheels for the car. I also have an SLP Loudmouth 2 catback i'm putting on. The majority of the work is gonna be inside. I have a complete dash and console from a 4th gen T/A waiting to be shoehorned in. Need to find some 4th gen Camaro seats to go with. Paint might have to wait, but when I do get it done I am thinking of going white with a black stinger on the SS style hood that's on there. That's pretty much the end of my novel. I'll post up a pic or two in a few.

This is from the summer. Decided to keep the stock spoiler instead of the Z28 spoiler. this is after I swapped grilles.  I hate the RS grille! Also was playing with my temporary paint soulution, satin black.

No real time into the body as of yet. Been hoarding parts to get it back on the road. It has four or five spots around the hatch that need smoothing from when someone broke into it in the past. Next to no rust. Had a small hole in the floor that I patched and the roof is surface rusted.

Check out thirdgen.org message boards, they've got alot of info on some guys that have done the dash swap.  the center console, if it's a manual will go in with no problems.

Do you need emissions where you are?  If you don't, the Vortec's will be a great addition.  I've got a set but I just packed them for 4 years because I am moving to England.  The TBI is decent but once you break the 350-400hp barrier its kind of limited to tune. You'd be better off going carb at that point though your cold weather driveability will be hampered.  Carbs HATE driving when cold.  Mine stalls all the time until it warms up enough.  I just had to learn to fire it up, let the car warm up before going anywhere.  No getting in it and going for me in the winter. :)

Slow going right now. Need valve spring retainers and all of my gaskets and wheel adapters for my front wheels. Also need a clutch and a tail housing for the T5 for the electronic speedo. (If I go with the manual, leaning that way.) In the process of trying to acquire the new powerplant (possibly) for my Nova since I'm robbing parts from it for the Camaro. Can we say LS1? Oh yeah!

I've been looking for a Nova for YEARS!!!  You didn't by chance pick yours up near the auto mall, or have it stored there did you?  There was one that looked almost identical to yours a while ago, I tried every dealership but no one knew who owned it....  i've owned a 74 and a 76, One day I'll own another one.

So, I decided to do the T5 swap. If anyone knows of a tailshaft housing for a T5 with a VSS instead of a cable driven speedometer (not likely)  let me know. LOL! Got my rear axle almost ready to go in. Fresh coat of paint and i'll be set. If my wife doesn't kill me, I'm planning on getting the car down to my work to start the transformation tomorrow.

No, the headers wont fit a 3rd gen from what I've read. I might use the x pipe as a y pipe and cap the open end with a cutout. Have a SLP  loudmouth 2 "catback" for a 4th gen i'm using. I'll probably see how they fit for myself when I do the engine work. You never know, they might fit with a little modification. Im not holding my breath though. I definitely want to run long tubes if I can.

I have the Hooker 1 3/4 on my 85 TA with a 350 and 5 speed.  I had to grind away a little at the upper A arm on the passenger side but they fit.  The only longtubes that WONT fit with a 5 speed are the Hedman LT's.

Are you talking about 4th gen LT1 headers though? That's what I have. I also have two sets of small block headers that fit a 2nd gen, Nova, Chevelle etc. I've read they fit ok, but ground clearance is terrible with them.

The teardown begins this week! Got the car moved to my work today. Plan is to get the rear end in on Wednesday night and start on the interior Thursday. Engine plans are changing. Gonna ditch the carb idea and go LT1 instead. Id go LSx but that is planned for down the road on the Nova. Plus I'm getting a sweet deal on the engine and 99% of what I need to get it done. Stay tuned.
