That makes sense right?   With SD off, your engine is running on the MAF - if you unplug it, there is nothing to run on, so it dies.

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

I was under the impression it would switch its self to SD if it looses the MAF.
What cought me as odd is if SD is turned on in the switch table (tuner cats) it doens't even try to use the MAF.  So my question is, is that proper operation?
I thought I used to know the computer system for this car...  Now I'm not so sure...

Killed on me on the freeway the other day in a bad spot...  So I decided it is time to get down and dirty on figuring this thing out.  When I finally got the car home I took out the thermostat, relocated my opti vent  to a cooler place, removed the vaccumm restrictor for the opti (should keep my opti quite cooler), changed my fan settings, as well as the timer for closed loop and the required temp for closed loop.
So I now run at about 155* to 170*  in traffic and the heat of the day.  I have to remain at 210* for just shy of 10 min to hit closed loop.
It has been like this for a couple of days now and has yet to stall.  With longer run times too and hotter out side conditions...

Had an MSD on my last Z (the '97) but had GM's on the '94 - never had a problem with any of them (the vented styles).  My sealed one that came on the '94 originally crapped out right when I got the car, but never a problem with the vented ones... but then I didnt douse the opti with the hose either.

I actually do run a vented.  My block and timing cover is off a ’96, so I am the Optispark II.
Question for you, How does oil get in the opti?  I have had oil in the past two. The last one was oil and water (water pump went).  Doest the seal at the bearing for the opti fail and let oil in or does it come from either the water pump seal and run down or get flipped up from the crank?  I have not noticed an oil leak but I live in an apartment.
I am afraid it gets pushed through the backside of the opti. I am running a high volume oil pump so when cold my oil pressure is high.  From the pictures I have seen of the MSD the spindle that goes from the in the cam and to the seal is one piece.  My old GM a few Accels and one EBAY cheapy  are two pieces with nothing but an O ring to seal them.
Is anyone familial with this?

Is this where the oil gets in? and is the MSD one piece?

Ive never heard of oil contamination - all pics Ive seen of dissected optis have been bone dry and failed due to water moisture / rust covering the optic. I would guess oil came through your vacuum lines though.

You have those little blue/white filters in-line on your vacuum lines to the opti right?  For sure have them routed / plugged in on the right side etc?  You could maybe check them and see if they're oil saturated?

No, I do not have anything in the lines between the intake manifold and opti. My car is a ’94 and was not originally set up for the vented opti.  The engine was build from a ‘96 long before I had my ’94 (I was going to put an LT1 in an 85 Vette, then I had to move and ran out of time and garage). I have heard some people have a vent harness of some sort with vacuum and back flow restrictors. I have checked the vacuum lines and no oil…  When I have pulled them apart in the past you can see the oil is coming through the bearing.  You can see the oil tracks on the disk being forced outward by centripetal force, It looks like you turned the disk level spun it at a few thousand RPM and put a few drops of oil in the center.  I will see if I can get a good enough pic to post so you can see. I still have the last disk.
