Ok. Stickies!!
« on: September 07, 2005, 11:10:58 pm »
Well, I'm sick and tired of having to peddle the car through first and 2nd gear so I'm going to get something a little stickier since the car only gets driven maby 100 miles a week at the most. I've been looking at:

All tires are 315x35x17

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial 2

Hoosier A3S05

Get the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial  (radial being the key word).

I heard they hook as good or better then ET Streets. (the non radial kind).

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

I personally like the new MT ET Street RADIAL.  They do hook very well and don't look like a slick (actual tread pattern).

If your really tired of spinning  youre more than welcome to borrow  my 10 inch Goodyear wrinke wall Eagles (wheels and all ) .  No one else is brave enough to borrow them   . One thing  about them is you WILL not spin  but   I bet with very many passes (or maybe even one)  you will be replacing rear gears   They have took out my 4:10s  3 times now....  Let me know .....

The only reason I would put a set of Drag Radials on a car is if the rules required it. Otherwise, get a real set of slicks, either Street Legal like th MT ET Streets or Hoosier Quick Time Pro's. You'll spin a set of Radial slicks and I think you'll be dissappointed. Borrrow those set of eagle slicks first and try them, you WON'T go back. Get a second set of wheels and slicks and put them on before you go racing. It's the only way to go!

Hey gofast68,
Last year I ran 14.0 at 101 with a 2.6 60 foot time.  I bought a set of ET streets.  I am worried that I might break something if I actually hook these things up.  How should I launch to go fast and still drive home ??? ???

lol     safest way is to get a trailer  ,  Racecars break  , especially streetcars that impersonate racecars  ..  If you want to go fast Just let  it all hang out   hang out   and  fix it when it breaks  Like I said  Im on my fourth rear end  .  I know how to fix it so it wont break near as often   But      the ring and pinions are cheaper than a $3500.00 rear end assy .

How fast is your car?  Are you running the stock rear end?  What kind of clutch are you running?   ???

Aren't the funnest cars to drive on the street those that impersonate race cars?

Back where there is air  I can run low 12s  stock rear end  ( 4:10 gears)   What the heck is this thing you refer to as a "clutch"  ??   And  actually  no  believe me  the funnest rides arent street cars..    by a long long shot     that comes with anything over a 270 inch wheelbase

Oh yeah,  I remember some of your earlier posts.  You have had some serious fun. :eek6:  I have a friend who was running diggers in the 50's with the old style Chrysler hemi with nitro.  Is that what you are talking about?  He still has this slingshot frame in a storage unit.  I have fantasies about resurrecting this classic race car.

I agree and disagree.  Slicks are awesome, but almost a waste on a car that sees 95% street and 5% track.  IMO slicks and DRs are about the same on the street, slicks take a substantial advantage on the track, but have no street life and bad road habits.  DRs last longer, hook almost as good, and you don't have to swap back and forth.  I ran slicks and switched back to DRs.

That said I think Geoff should buy slicks and another set of tires because 17in DRs are garbage.  I have ran every single brand of DR in a 15, 16, and 17in (even the Yokohama A032Rs). I feel I do have some insite on this and you won't do any better than a 2.0 60' on 17s JMO.

Geoff you're welcome to just take the 315 BFG DR's that Cody gave to me last year. You know they've been on your car and brynnda's more than mine. Come down and try them out if you want. Just an idea. We know those hooked enough to break something in your rearend before your gear/carrier swap.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

When I drove to the track, I'd pack my slicks in the back seat, get there and swap them in the parking lot. I'd race the hell out of the car, with a little prayer in between each round hoping that I wouldn't break, and then swap my radials back on and go home. Yes a few times, things happened, but it was things like fuel pumps, rocker arms etc. It's not if it's going to happen, it's when. Get the full slicks, have a hell of a time and if you break, call a good friend to come help you out. You'll only break once or twice before you take measures to stop the breakage.

So, if you are going to the track, swap the full slicks on. When you leave, take them off. They'll last for years that way and you'll have that advantage at the track. I agree, they're junk on the street and the life on the street is garbage too. We're talking about the track, RMR none-the-less. Get the full slicks and enjoy your stay at the track. Put the radials back on for your street carnage!

Well Here are my thoughts and they mirror alot of the stuff that has been said:

For your 9.5" and 11" ZR1's (your "street" combo) get a nice looking set of handling tires and drive the hell out of them! Sure they will spin but you will ALWAYS have to pedal 1st and 2nd gear on the street (more on this below)

Now put a set of SLICKS as in Full on Slicks on the stock rear 16"x8" rims AND when you go to the track switch those out with your 17x11"s
Also weight the front 16" rims w/ 245's and the 17" rims w/ 275's and run whichever weight less run at the track also (unsprung weight = beter weight transfer, and also less rolling mass, even though the 275 have more rolling resistance but that's more tires (skinnies) )

ALSO what suspension mods do you have ??? if you are spinning so badly you NEED:

Tubular LCA's: http://www.spohn.net/category.cfm?categoryid=1043
Relo Brackets: http://www.spohn.net/category.cfm?categoryid=1044
Tourque arm: http://www.spohn.net/category.cfm?categoryid=1049
and Panhard Bar: http://www.spohn.net/category.cfm?categoryid=1046

OH and you also need: ;)
http://www.spohn.net/product.cfm?productid=1387

SO ANYWAYS if it were "me" I'd be putting these on the FRONT and REAR of the ZR1's:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=g-Force+T%2FA+KD

And these on the stock 16'ers:

28" tall: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HOO%2D18153&N=4294923107+4294878975+4294922134+4294904668+4294854859&autoview=sku
26" tall: (but DOT aprroved) : http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HOO%2D17430&N=4294923107+4294878975+4294922134+4294904668+4294854873&autoview=sku

OK enough from me

That is a good idea, but trying to go out and spend $400 on DRs and $350 on slicks is a healthy investment to have the best of both worlds.

Bottom line is   you want to hook and be serious  get slicks ( your welcome to borrow mine )   if you like playing  get drag/ street tires  Ive got both and with a instant shot of nos   sometimes the   street play tires wont hook    .  ever seen a fuel car or a pro stocker with street tires on the dragstrip ?
