Need some help
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:06:44 pm »
Well I 've finally come to bridge I really didn't want to cross for a while. But it seems I don't have a choice. I could use some veterans help with the LS1. Personally, I've never dived into one of these motors before so with that said. Here's what I need replaced.

- New timing gear set
- Water pump
-Cam / all required hardware
- Lifters... :Unexpected:

So if anyone is willing to help out. I can compensate you for your troubles. I would like another pair of hands so I can learn how to work on one of these. Guess I don't have the confidence...

Well let me now either way.

Thanks in advance everyone.

You won't want to do the lifters - you have to pull the heads for those.

I could probably give you a hand in the spring.

The SS looks like it could kick your ass, the WS6 looks like it's coming over to do it!

Thanks man. The lifters are making a little bit of noise. Not much, but its there. So I thought I might as well swap those out.

Then I would suggest doing heads at the same time.   They will have to come off for the lifters, so you might as well put better on if you plan to do all that work.

Well worth it at that time, every little bit helps.  I wish I had mine done when I did my cam swap/conversion on my 5th gen, but I was in a hurry.  Even though the stock LS3 heads are pretty darn good, they could still be a little better.

I was thinking of Some AFR's...230CC but I think that will bump up the compression a bit. Too much for a boosted car I think. I have some decisions to make. Spend the money on heads and cam, while hoping the motor stays together or just save up to build a motor. I just might just stick with the cam swap for now. The main reason for the cam swap is, I am going to replace the gear timing set and chain, water pump. So might as well do the cam.

All LS1s make some lifter noise. Unless its sounding like a sewing machine. Dont worry about it and slap a cam in it.
If you do decide to do it, just clean up your stock heads, shave them a little to bump compression up.

This isnt an old iron motor. A little extra Compression and boost can be just fine together.
