Apart again
« on: July 13, 2005, 12:40:34 am »
Well, I have my engine torn down again. It's been burning a little oil and for the life of me I haven't been able to figure it out. I thought it was just leaking in from where I opened up the bolt holes when I ported the heads, but every time I pulled the rockers off the bolts were dry! Well, come to find out, I used a felpro valve stem seal kit for the LS1 head, and almost every single seal pulled off of the seat! WTF is up with that? Has anyone else had that problem before?
PIC:

Anyway, while the heads are off thinner gaskets are going in along with more porting and more polishing, some Taylor 10.8mm spark plug wires (since one broke), NGK TR6 plugs (because of higher compression), as well as some ARP head bolts and ARP rod bolts so I can safely spin up to 6700 without loosing a rod. Also a tune is on the way so the stupid thing will actually run right for a change! I realised something a little scary... after swaping the rod bolts I'll have removed every bolt from my motor with the exception of the main cap bolts! Crazy!!!

If you're really feeling froggy, turn those heads over to Nick at Chapman racing. He is doing some additional (read: sideline) work on my head/ cam combo and is teriffic to deal with.

Man, do you ever drive that thing anymore?  It seems like every other day you have it apart

Sweet work Geoff. I hope it's coming along great. I bet half the miles on it this year are from coming down to help me with my car  :icon_lol:

Might be time for some better seals, and Nick could help you out with some super sweet seals at basically cost. If you want me to, i'll talk to him about them.

I know you've got a lot more planned on this tear down than just top side. How's the rest of it coming???

well everything is on hold until saturday when I can work on it again. Two jobs keeps me a little two busy! And yes it is apart almost as much as I drive it! LOL!! I have as much fun modding as I do driving. When you get poor gas milage it ends up costing just as much to drive as it does mod!!!!!

Well got the rod bolts installed. Man what a pain in the arse! You have to drop the k-member to weazle the oil pan out because of the bell housing. UGG! anyway it was an adventure. However I'm a little worried about my rod bearings. I looked at every one and they all looked exactly the same:

96,000 miles and this is what they look like? I'm pretty sure the motor is comming out this winter and getting a rebuild with some extra goodies.

for 96,000 I would say they look normal.

I assume you are also running synthetic?  (ie:  Mobil 1 ?)

'06 Yamaha Raptor
'08 Pontiac G8 GT

The only thing that would concern me is the uneven wear pattern but for 96K that's not horrible, especially if you'll be doing a rebuild soon.

I'd just be careful and not spin it to the moon.

Yeah running Mobile 1 along with prolong additive. I am a little worried about the wear pattern also, but since it's on all of the bearings, and it's exaxtly the same on each one, I didn't care. Maby gm's grinding maching was a little out of alignment? LOL! Oh well!

I had mine up to 6990 RPM and is still running.
But I try to shift it at 6400.
You should be a professional on disasembling/asembling your LS1 by now.

YES!!!!!  on the Mustang that wants a piece!!

He wants to race this weekend! so get er done!     He thinks he should have no problem keeping up with you... :haha:

it's a 1995 Mustang GT 5.0  Headers/3.73's/CAI/X-pipe/and he just installed a new cam that is smaller then the one in my car.  Anyway I have taken a ride in this car. and my G-tec pulled like 15.3 in the 1/4...... Im thinking the weight was set alittle off... I had it for 3750lbs, and thats including him who is like 240lbs. and me I dunno but I honestly do not think that car can dip into the high 13's .... I mean bone stock a '95 GT is rated at 215hp.....I honestly do not think he gained 165hp with those mods....more like 65hp.    Anyway I took him for a ride in my car, and he "feels" he could have a good race against me, and atleast "keep up" with your car...I don't know what he means by "keep up"  I just want to get you pulling 15 cars on him on video.....

I'd love to get to the track, but my name isn't Surely!  The problem is I work two jobs so it dosn't cordinate very well. I'll try to Get-r-done this weekend. Why didn't he want a piece of you? You know you could take him pretty hard core. The weight dosn't do anything when you G-Tech a car. When you  move the little slider over to the other spot it erases anything you put into the other side. It just measures acceleration. Only the HP figures will be screwed up if the weight is wrong. HP is directly associated with weight and acceleration in the forumla those use to calculate HP.

That's one fast Mustang I guess.  If he really thinks he'll keep up with a heads/cam, LS1 he's either stupid or there's more done to it than he's saying.  Not that heads/cam LS1's can't be beat, but a non power adder 5.0, with stock heads isn't gonna get it done.
